Active harmonic filter technology

The right technology, specified to your site

We pair specialist engineering with technology from established international manufacturers — giving clients access to proven, globally deployed equipment, selected objectively for the conditions recorded on their network.

Below are the core technologies we work with. None is "best" in isolation — the correct solution depends entirely on what your site measurements reveal.

Power factor correction

Capacitor banks & detuned correction

Capacitor banks supply reactive power locally, lifting power factor so the network draws less apparent power. On their own, however, conventional capacitors can be overloaded — and even amplify problems — on sites with significant harmonics.

Detuned power factor correction adds a reactor in series with each capacitor stage, tuning the bank away from harmonic resonance. This protects the capacitors, prevents harmonic amplification and delivers reliable correction on modern, non-linear networks.

  • Lower maximum-demand and reactive-energy charges
  • Released transformer and cable capacity
  • Protection against harmonic resonance and capacitor failure

Dynamic compensation

Static var generators (SVG)

An SVG is an inverter-based system that generates reactive power electronically and injects it in milliseconds — following fast-changing loads that conventional capacitor stages simply cannot keep up with.

Because correction is step-less and near-instant, an SVG holds power factor steady on welding plant, furnaces, cranes and injection moulding without the switching stress, resonance risk or failures associated with capacitors on dynamic loads.

  • Instant, step-less reactive correction
  • Ideal for rapidly fluctuating loads
  • No capacitor/fuse failures from fast cycling
Harmonic mitigation

Active harmonic filters (AHF)

An AHF continuously measures the harmonic currents drawn by non-linear loads and injects an equal but opposite current — actively cancelling distortion and restoring a clean waveform at the connection point.

Unlike passive filters tuned to a single frequency, an active filter adapts in real time across the harmonic spectrum, making it well suited to variable loads and supporting compliance with IEEE 519 distortion limits.

  • Cancels distortion across the harmonic spectrum in real time
  • Reduces thermal stress on transformers, cables and motors
  • Supports IEEE 519 compliance at the PCC

Hybrid PFC + Harmonic Solutions

Active and passive technologies combined into a single custom panel with remote monitoring — resolving power factor and harmonics together where a site needs both.

Voltage Regulation

Solutions to stabilise supply voltage and ride through dips and fluctuations — protecting sensitive process and electronic loads from disturbance-driven trips and damage.

Specified per site after measurement of the voltage condition.

Monitoring & Metering Systems

Power Monitoring Expert (PME), revenue and check metering and permanent analysers — the data layer that verifies every correction and tracks performance over time.

How the right solution is chosen

The technology follows the evidence

There is no single "best" product. The correct solution depends on what your network is actually doing — and we specify it objectively.

Because we work with leading global manufacturers rather than a single product line, technology is selected on technical merit, lifecycle value, reliability and return on investment. The client's outcome leads the specification.

  • Site measurements — recorded voltage, current, power factor and disturbance.
  • Load profile — how demand and reactive power vary through the day and the process.
  • Harmonic conditions — the THD/TDD spectrum and the loads producing it.
  • Operating environment — temperature, dust, space and network topology.
  • Client objectives — cost reduction, compliance, reliability, capacity or all four.
